In Nijinsky’s notorious ballet Afternoon of a Faun, a young nymph rejects the (very erotic) advances of a faun. Constantine Baecher’s Sketches of a Woman Remembering are three studies of the nymph, now grown up, remembering with regret that she said no to the affair. She carries a veil, like a memory she has never let go.
