June 2010
Greetings,

Not a month goes by without a major newspaper sounding the alarm on the demise of ballet. There are no more good choreographers, the argument goes - where is the next Balanchine, the next Diaghilev, to save our art form?

I couldn't disagree more. When I look around at my colleagues, I see a wealth of invention and talent. None of them will be the next Balanchine or Diaghilev: they are themselves. They won't 'save' ballet - they will re-imagine it according to their own vision.

To my great delight, some of that talent is at home right here at New Chamber Ballet. (Our upcoming season finale performance features works by two of them, Emery LeCrone and Constantine Baecher, along with a new work of my own.)

So if you're worried about the future of ballet, relax. It will be fine. I promise. And - when you're done relaxing, come see our shows. You won't regret it!

Warmly,

Miro Magloire

Upcoming Performance - Season Finale

New Chamber BalletJune 11th & 12th, 2010

What a season it has been - and it will culminate in a glorious finale with four ballets, including one world premiere.

Haydn's music is on the menu for the second time this year in Miro Magloire's newest ballet, a fast-paced trio involving a pianist, three dancers and many veils.

Mournful moments abound in the return of Constantine Baecher's Viduity, a "ballet made for sinking into" by "a welcome new voice."(Claudia LaRocco, The New York Times)

The art of dancing on one pointe shoe is on display in In A Simple Black Dress, a solo to Pierre Boulez' Anthèmes.

And finally, Emery LeCrone's Chamber Dances, set to John Adams' Road Movies, will close the season with a feast of relentlessly driving energy.

Don't miss it! Tickets are on sale already - reserve your seats today!

NCB Review - Dance Europe

Pas De... An Elegantly Arranged Dish

What do Europeans know about New Chamber Ballet? Not too much, probably. But that may change once they read Tim Martin's rave review in Dance Europe Magazine:

"Miro Magloire's presentations, given in the elegant studios of New York's City Center, feature finely-crafted choreography, excellent musicians, some compositions written expressly for the evening's dances, simple, tasteful costuming, and well-trained dancers," Martin writes, adding, "[Magloire] doesn't just assemble the elements of a show, but, rather, serves them to us like an elegantly arranged dish."

Discussing Pas De... (photo), Martin writes, "Virtuoso pianist Melody Fader sends out Magloire's generously-spaced chords, impelling dancer Emery LeCrone to fill the long silences with movement... Dancers Victoria North and Amy Brandt are introduced and the music gets fuller, cascading into repetitions that create a surreal atmosphere."

Martin closes his review with the words "This is quirky, high quality work which will no doubt grow into the larger audience it deserves." We hope that will include a large European audience...

The Art, and the Craft
2010 Choreographic Summer Intensive Can Choreography Be Taught?

Choreographers are born, not grown, goes a widespread opinion in the dance world.

A moment of reflection will reveal how strange this thought is. Haven't composers, painters, architects for centuries learned their craft before excelling in their art - to say nothing of musicians, and dancers? Why would choreographers be any different?

You see where this is going. We think there should be a place where young choreographers can train, learn, exchange ideas, experiment - and even fail. Safely, away from the pressure of the 'real world'.

Naturally, we can't just open a school - we don't have the means for that. Instead we'll start small, with a few short workshops later this year. A few days to immerse oneself into the basics of the art: how to develop movement, move bodies through space, creatively use music, compellingly structure a piece and bring a dance successfully before an audience.

And after that, we'll see what happens...
