Greetings,

For a company of our size, the departure of any dancer has a tremendous impact - even more so if that dancer has been with us from the beginning. At the end of this season, Christin Hanna will move back to California after four years with NCB. Reason enough for us to give her a rousing farewell in our upcoming performances.

Another newsworthy event is our return later this month to the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. The Pillow is always a unique experience, and a worthwhile trip to take if you are within reach.

Read on for the performance details, a portrait of Christin Hanna and other news stories. I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!

Until then, warmly,

Miro Magloire
Artistic Director, New Chamber Ballet

Upcoming Performance I: Season Finale

June 27th & 28th, 2008

NCB will close its 2007-2008 season with an ambitious program of six works by Miro Magloire and Constantine Baecher. Christin Hanna, in her final appearance with the company, will perform in Magloire's Follia, to music by Corelli, and Baecher's Viduity to music by Janacek, which premiered earlier this season to rave reviews. She will also reprise her signature role in Baecher's pas de deux Wanderlust on a Chekhov theme, set to Schubert.

Two additional highlights of the evening will be Aria and Anvil, a new pas de deux by Baecher in which Hanna will perform alongside the choreographer, and a world premiere by Magloire set to his own score. The program will be completed by a repeat performance of Magloire's Klavierstück to music by Stockhausen, in which the piano takes center stage along with the dancers.

Don't miss this program! Tickets are on sale already - reserve your seats today!

Upcoming Performance II: Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival

June 19th, 2008

Nothing makes a dancer happier than an invitation to perform at the legendary Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. 'The Pillow', as it is affectionately known, is quite unlike any other dance festival, a unique historic site in the breathtaking natural scenery of the Berkshires. At 75, it is the country's longest-running dance festival, and has been pivotal to the history of ballet and modern dance on this continent.

No surprise then that NCB's dancers are euphoric about performing in the Pillow's Inside/Out Series on June 19th. Two years after their first appearance there (photo), the company dancers are still raving about the experience, and are looking forward to their return visit.

At a mere three-hour driving distance from New York City, it is also a wonderful way to spend the day, and we hope you can join us this year for an unforgettable experience...

Portrait - Christin Hanna

New Horizons

Few dancers figure so prominently in NCB's many ventures as Christin Hanna. In her four years with the company, she has been a tireless source of energy both on stage and off.

A special part of her artistic life at NCB has been her collaboration with choreographer Constantine Baecher. Baecher, who dances with the Royal Danish Ballet, is a long time friend of Hanna's and in fact it was Hanna who introduced him to NCB. Hanna has since performed starring roles in each of Baecher's ballets at NCB, and credits him with unlocking a previously unknown depth of interpretation in her dancing. "He really pressed me hard to break my boundaries, and sometimes it wasn't easy," she admits. "Perhaps because of that process, each of his ballets is something I inhabit. I have completely lost myself in them. Being in a position to make a connection like that has truly meant the world to me."

This summer, after eight years in New York City, she will return to her native California. "Joining NCB really shaped and matured me as a dancer, and most importantly, as a person," Hanna said recently. "Feeling comfortable artistically opened new doors for me in many contexts. I've always had the idea of pursuing other avenues, and since my time here has been so fulfilling, I feel free to move on without regret."

As for her future plans, she remains open-minded, although one can assume that dance will continue to play a part in her life. "My two top priorities are starting college and teaching dance. Teaching really provides me a new outlet for the art form that I enjoy wholeheartedly." There are some lucky students in the Tahoe area...

Video! Video! Video!

"Life" on YouTube

Our YouTube page keeps growing... Last month we added a video of the ballet Life (to music by Mozart). Due to its length, this video (shot in performance) is in two parts. Like our other videos, it can be accessed directly, or through our NCB YouTube Channel.

Meanwhile, Fall, the first video we posted, is approaching 5,000 views! Soon more people will have seen our work online than in live performance...

Whether you visit our NCB Channel for a quick peak, watch the entire ballet or subscribe, you'll never have to miss out on our dancing again...

Review!

New York Times

Our March performance was not only enthusiastically received by the audience, but also reviewed in the NY Times. Times critic Roslyn Sulcas concluded that "the experience of watching this program, however, is more than the sum of its parts. The music and musicians are wonderful, the dancers never less than fully focused, and the intimacy of the setting, emphasized by Mr. Magloire's friendly introductions to each piece, defuses the alienation that abstraction can sometimes engender." Well said!

The Buzz!

News From Our Artists...

New Chamber Ballet's artists once again have been busy since the last show:
Christin Hanna (photo, front center) performed with Cincinnati Ballet in George Balanchine's Serenade and Mauricio Wainrot's Carmina Burana... The Royal Danish Ballet premiered our guest choreographer Constantine Baecher's new ballet The Ungentle Guest... Lauren Toole and Damien Johnson performed in Los Angeles Ballet's spring season in works by George Balanchine and Jennifer Backhaus... Elizabeth Brown performed with Deborah Lohse's ad hoc ballet in Monographs... Pianist Melody Fader played a solo recital at the Greenwich House...

But the awards for most glamorous Pas de Deux go to Emily Vonne SoRelle, who married Kenyon Adams on April 12th, and Denise Small, who married William Vidal on May 30th. Congratulations from all of us at NCB!

An Always Urgent Matter...

Keeping the Wheels Turning in 2008

The summer is here, and we're asking for your money again... Why? Ticket sales still cover only about 20% of the costs of each performance. We aim to keep our costs as low as possible, but there are rehearsal studio fees (a big item here in the city), performance space fees, music royalties, performer fees, printing costs, costuming and costume maintenance, sheet music costs, stamps, banking fees, advance ticket sale fees, PR costs...

All of these items are necessary to produce our little, bare bones performances. Instead of cutting back, we try to perform more to keep our art alive and you, our audience, happy. Not an easy task, but we can do it with your help! Please take a moment to go to our website and find out how you can support our work...
