Greetings,
What came first - Music or
Dance? I imagine that if I were to
travel back in time to solve this
chicken-and-egg question, I would soon learn
that the distinction between the two is a
recent one - in ancient times, both were
felt to be the same.
Even if nowadays music and dance are
considered to be very
different art forms, at the New Chamber
Ballet they are becoming one again. As we
progress in our artistic endeavour, we become
more and
more adept at recognizing the similarity of
gestures that
are expressed in sounds or in movements.
Over the summer, we had plenty of opportunity
to explore this further, and we're ready to
show you the results in our season opener in
three weeks, with new ballets to music by
Sciarrino, Janacek and Telemann, including a
new work by our guest choreographer
Constantine Baecher.
I hope to see you at the performance!
Sincerely,
Miro Magloire
Artistic Director, New Chamber Ballet

Guest Choreographer Constantine Baecher
NCB's guest choreographer Constantine Baecher
(photo, in rehearsal) has contributed
regularly to the company's
repertory during the last three years.
American by birth, he now lives in Copenhagen
where he dances with the Royal Danish Ballet.
His works have reached beyond
NCB's house style of abstract dance with
ballets like Wanderlust, based on a
Chekhov
short story, and Terzetto, inspired by the
dancers' rehearsal interactions. "Though most
of the work that I'm attracted to
is centered on story and character, my own
work often
starts as a feeling - the challenge being
then to morph
those emotions into movement," Baecher says.
"I would like to do more plot-based pieces in
the future."
His new ballet Viduity, premiering
September 21st, is set to a piano score by
Leos Janacek. A portrayal of a group of
persons in mourning, it exemplifies Baecher's
meticulous attention to detail. "When how
something is done is more important than that
it's done, that to me is art," he says.

The New Chamber Ballet Tahoe Project 2007
NCB dancers Christin Hanna, Damien Johnson
and Artistic Director Miro Magloire
recently returned from a week of teaching and
performing in Lake Tahoe, CA, as part of the
New Chamber Ballet's Tahoe Project.
The project's goal is to build a
continued presence of the NCB in Tahoe,
bringing both a cultural and educational
boost to the region and establishing a West
coast hub for further touring.
The activities included classes and workshops
for local students, as well as a performance
of pas de deux from the company
repertory. Judging from the warm reception by the
community and the ample media coverage
(including a in-depth
portrait of Tahoe native
Christin Hanna ), the project is well
on its way to being a success...

New Chamber Ballet Poster & CD
The 2006-07 Season poster - dancer's legs and
violin in a photo by Kristin Lodoen Linder -
is now available at the gift shop.
Also, NCB pianist Melody Fader recently
recorded her first solo CD in New
York City, with works by Chopin, Mozart and
Scriabin. Two of the offerings are familiar
to our audiences: Mozart's Sonata K311 is
featured in our
ballet Spring, and Scriabin's daunting
piano Etudes are the music to Constantine
Baecher's ballet Terzetto. The CD is
completed by a selection of Chopin works,
including the seldom-heard but captivating
Nocturne op.62 no.1.
You can order both items in our gift shop to
support our
upcoming performances...

News From Our Artists...
It was a busy summer for the New Chamber
Ballet's artists: pianist Melody Fader
performed in Colorado and then traveled to
Berlin... Elizabeth Brown (photo)
performed
along with NCB Alumnae Amy Brandt and
Candice Thompson with NCB Guest
Choreographer
Deborah Lohse's
ad hoc ballet... While performing in
Lake Tahoe
with the NCB, Christin Hanna was the
subject of an in-depth
portrait article
in the Sierra Sun... And
Denise Small traveled to France where
she promptly got engaged to her long-time
boyfriend, Mr. William Vidal! (Don't worry,
she'll be back in time
for our
season.) Congratulations from all of us at
NCB!...

An Always Urgent Matter...

Keeping the Wheels Turning
At the beginning of this new season, we're
asking for your money again... Why? Ticket
sales cover only about 20% of the costs of each
performance. We aim to keep our costs as low
as possible, but there are rehearsal
studio fees (a big item here in the
city),
performance space fees, music royalties,
performer
fees, printing costs, costume building and
maintenance, sheet music costs, stamps, banking
fees, advance ticket sale fees, PR costs...
All of these items are necessary to produce
our little,
bare bones performances. Instead of cutting
back, we try to perform more to keep
our art
alive and you, our audience, happy. Not an
easy task,
but we can do it with your help!
Please take a
moment to go to our website and find out how
you can
support our work...
